LG KP220 Available in Pakistan for Rs. 6,999

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on June 23, 2008 at 12:08 AM

LG KP 220KP 220 is a new phone running on TV these days from LG; basically aiming at mid ranged users who can’t compromise with the music capabilities of devices they hold.

Look and Feel

Priced at Rs. 6,999, LG KP 220 comes with a plastic body, a metallic keypad and a shiny display. Phone looks stylish; however the keypad could be bettered, as the metallic plate used beneath keypad is too thin, which make the whole plate pushed down when any of the key is pressed, which are hard. Other than this, phone looks decent and simple with bright graphics.

Music Capabilities

LG says that KP 220 has an MP3 player with a dedicated shortcut key at the top of menu key, and can be controlled (play, pause, skip, stop etc) with a D-pad. However, you can fast forward or rewind songs, instead you have an option of skipping them if didn’t like the track.

KP 220’s sound quality is not up to the mark, but the headphone can do little wonders with your music experience. Also equipped is a FM radio, which allows you to preset upto 9 channels. You can also schedule recording for FM progrmme or real time recording with FM record option.

Memory

LG says that phone has built-in memory of 60 MB with an option to expand it with MicroSD card.

Camera

LG KP 220 offers image capturing and video recording with its 1.3 megapixel camera. Obviously the picture quality should not be expected high, even in day light. Handset comes with multi-shot option to capture simultaneous pictures. You may miss edit or personalize options for pictures with this LG Phone.

Connectivity

The phone is GPRS compatible, however surfing Internet could be not that easy due to the small screen. Alongwith USB connectivity to download/upload music comes the Blutetooth as well.

Battery

The phone has a great battery backup but it shuts down suddenly, once the first bar in the battery meter disappears. This happened to us after we played radio for nine straight hours and had talked for about two hours.

Pakistan Telecom Market | An Insight

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on June 17, 2008 at 1:11 AM

I know Umair Naeem through his posts at NetExpress, and infact i am one of his fan due to his command on the topic for which he writes.

Just went through one of his latest art, that covers Pakistan Telecom Market in a very a effective manner… For those who want to have an insight of the market, must go through this article…. an excerpt is given below

Pakistan is a highly competitive market because consumers are not bound by long-term contracts to cellular service companies. Rather, the consumer simply needs an ID card photocopy to set up a connection, or switch to another provider. The consumer has the option of a post-paid monthly billing connection, which is preferred in the professional segment, or the popular-among-the-masses pre-paid connection, through which the consumer can recharge the connection whenever and by any amount. To add to the consumer’s benefit, mobile phone portability is also available, which allows one to retain the same phone number regardless of changes in cellular service.

Warid Telecom to invest additional $1bn by end of 2009

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 22, 2008 at 7:39 AM

Waird Telecom has decided to aggressively start its network rollout throughout the country. For the purpose, Warid has announced to invest US 1 billion dollars till end 2009. In an interview with Romail Kenneth of ‘Daily Times’, Marwan Zawaydeh, CEO Warid Telecom has confirmed this upcoming investment. Along with he said that Warid Telecom is well positioned to fight for second place in Pakistan Cellular Market.

It merits mentioning here that Warid is currently at forth slot with 14.76 Million customers, almost 2.47 million customers behind Telenor, the 3rd largest cellular company of Pakistan(As of April 2008).

This upcoming investment will be mainly utilized to expand the network reach throughout the country. With this announced investment Warid Telecom’s total investment in the sector will reach 2.5 Billion US dollars.

Warid’s coverage spans in 250 cities in Pakistan, however they are quite strict in adding new cities by taking their coverage to only those areas which have fully functional sales and franchise network.

It maybe recalled that Warid Telecom has sold its 30 percent shares valuing US 758 Million dollars to Singtel of Singapore to support its expanding network requirements. Before that Warid had sealed a loan agreement deal of US 500 Million dollars with Standard Chartered Bank and ABN Amro Bank in November 2006.

Another event happened today, which I want to integrate in the post is about the re-launch of Company’s new logo “Life ka Network” in Lahore. Warid’s CEO re-launched the Logo which looks like backing the idea of connecting every corner of Pakistan through its network.

Zawaydeh gave a detailed presentation on company’s achievements on completion of three-year operation in Pakistan and Mr. Thomas Yeo highlighted the future plans of the company.

I am also going to cover Warid’s third anniversary on May 23rd 2008 with stats and company achievements in its three years life…

Stay tuned…

Wateen to face WiMAX Competition in Pakistan, Soon

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 17, 2008 at 6:59 AM

One of our fellows, M. Junaid Khan, recently discovered a job’s ad from Wi-Tribe in some newspaper.Wi-Tribe Obviously, there is nothing exciting in that, however, the clue he got was of some importance for internet users in Pakistan.

Junaid Khan, predicts that Wi-Tribe is going to launch their WiMAX services very soon in Pakistan. It merits mentioning here that Wi-Tribe is jointly owned by Qatar Telecom, ATTCO group and Clearwire, and they are already operating WiMAX in Jordan. Wateen Telecom

Wi-Tribe is one of fourteen LDI license holders in Pakistan, and they had been in a dispute with Telecard, reported here.

LinkDotNet is also intending to launch its WiMAX services in Pakistan, while they are in an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent for WiMAX deployment.

So there are some sign of competition for Wateen Telecom in coming days. Wateen say they have managed to grab 15,000 customers till now, and they hold 9 percent share in broadband market. Un-confirmed sources have reported that Wateen may start its DSL operations as well, to compete and survive in the tightening low priced market.

PTA to Monitor all International Traffic through ICH

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 17, 2008 at 6:04 AM

‘The News’ today reported that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is working on a proposal to maintain “International Clearing House” to monitor all calls that are landing into Pakistan from abroad.

News item said that PTA is making efforts to audit all incoming and outgoing international calls to make more money from taxes. It was told that Regulator is convinced that this way they may help small Long Distance and International (LDI) and LL (local loop) operators to survive in current competitive telecom market.
‘The News’ also discussed the impact this International Clearing House is going to make on telecom operators. Mainly the impression the News gave that this step from PTA is going to cost companies some bucks, at the same time, the implementation of any such project is not mentioned in LDI and LL Telecom Licenses.

ICH is said to be governed by an executive board that will bear the representation from almost all LDI operators. This board will monitor all landing points/gateways/switches and will conduct regular technical audits to ensure transparency.

Apparently, all LDI and LL operators, except PTCL are severely against the implementation of any such International Clearing House.

After consultation, PTA is expected to soon launch ICH, which may boost the grey traffic coming into the country.
