3G iPhone Got Unlocked in only 5 Days

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 16, 2008 at 6:33 AM

Good News has hit for those countries where 3G iPhone was not officially launched. Original iPhone took good time to get unlocked, however, its 3G variant, 3G iPhone was unlocked in only its first week. MobileCrunch reports quoting a Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that the DesbloqueioBR has hit won the race and became very first one to unlock 3G iPhone.

A relatively simple procedure was adopted to achieve this. They altered handset’s firmware and installed a special card add-on to the SIM chip, that’s it. With this configureation DesbloqueioBR claims that the 3G iPhone can now connect to any carrier.

In 22 countries, only one service provider has been authorized to sell 3G iPhone. All carieers are subsidizing the Apple’s newest gadget, resulting long term contracts and relatively larger monthly prices.

DesbloqueioBR says that it has plans to charge between 250 and 375 dollars to unlock an 3G iPhone. Other unlocks are sure to follow and so are the stories that cover them.

3G iPhone and Nokia N95 - A Comparison for Pakistani Users

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 14, 2008 at 2:01 PM

I have previously discussed the availability of iPhone in Pakistan, emergence of 3G iPhone and its craze that we have been witnessing in Pakistani consumers, now i thought of presenting a comparison 3G iPhone and Nokia N95.

As we know well that 3G iPhone or even its earlier version are good enough when it comes to data services, but a gadget lover in Pakistan can not wholly rely on the data features that 3G iPhone offers while compromising with other features such as GPS, 5 MP Camera, Video Capturing etc.

Check out below table that compares the features of 3G iPhone and Nokia N95

Apple iPhone

Apple 3G iPhone

Clearly visible that N95 can be a better phone in Pakistan than of 3G iPhone with 5MP Camera, Bluetooth, third party application, MMS, many audio and video supported formats and so on. But if you are addicted to touchscreen and navigation ease that 3G iPhone offers, then 3G iPhone is your certani choice.

Mr. Asim who used iPhone for some time, states in his blog that he has come back to Nokia N95. He has collection of reasons for doing so, which are as following

  1. With N95 you can send/receive files on N95
  2. DVD like video Recording
  3. 5 MegaPixel Camera
  4. Internal GPS and Nokia excellent Sports Tracker Application
  5. Bluetooth A2DP Profile (Stereo)
  6. Copy and Paste (Major Bummer)
  7. I can view www.bbcurdu.com (Not possible on iphone)
  8. I can stream into realplayer

  12. Voice Activated Calling ( Simply Speak; the phone will identify the contact and call)
  13. Picture Slide show (Pan and Zoom) with Music (Why iphone does not have this feature)
  14. Picture Editor
  15. Easy transfer of Pictures and Songs (Not through complicated iTunes)
  16. and finally lots n lots of good software and 3D games!!!

You may also look at following video that compares iPhone and Nokia N95. The video actually backs me that Nokia N95 can be a better option for basic telephony features

iPhone Lands Globally

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 12, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Enriched with enhanced data capabilities, Apple’s new iPhone 3G has hit the stores in more than 22 countries world wide, sales started with Japan/New Zealand and ending the drama in west shores of US in Seattle and California. Technology and Gadgets blogs remained engaged with iPhone discussions whole day long, but what these discussions mean to a Pakistani cellular user? I am afraid nothing much.

Never mind, dealers and buyers in Pakistan are anticipating the 3G iPhone thriving in local markets in as little as a few days. Though they were not big in numbers, but the roar and thirst of iPhone enthusiasts could be easily sensed in local markets in Pakistan.

Along with Pakistan, In the many other Asian countries, ads and banners were seen in markets for unlocked iPhones and services to unlock them. Phone sellers (retailers and distributors alike) are already seen taking orders for the new iPhone, who estimated its arrival on the gray market in about a week.

On other side, world wide launch saw a drew thousands in North America, Asia and Europe, with customers creating a half-mile line in Tokyo, braving summer heat in Madrid and scouring Toronto for the shortest queues. Lines stretched kilometers with thousands of buyers in queue to get their iPhone.

Through the process stock cleared, however, many faced activation problems that marred the launch of the new 3G iPhone - alongwith, Apple admitted that its new data-synchronisation service, MobileMe, also suffered from some technical difficulties.

for a closer look at 3G iPhone check out this very detailed video review of device

Apple Opens its Retail Store in Lahore - iPhone Missing on Stands

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Its quite an old news, but I thought my readers my like exploring it, along with some Pics of Apple’s existence may give a better idea about This Apple’s store in Lahore. US Ambassador to Pakistan Anne W Patterson herself had launched this Apple Computers store in Lahore around a month ago.

Apple’s debutant store in Pakistan, named as iStore, sits in PACE, Lahore; and it is reportedly not a big one as of Apple’s standards. Yet you may find Apple’s killer gadgets like iPod and others. Don’t expect any iPhone there, but only the flayers unveiling the glory of iPhone to Pakistani people.

It must be noted that this is not an exclusively Apple’s retail store, instead it happens to be the join venture between Raffles, Apple’s authorized distributor in Pakistan since 2006 and Apple Computers itself.

Raffles have taken Apple’s products in multiple cities of Pakistan, including, Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad and Multan. Click here for their contact details in these cities.

Tons of thanks to Irfan for allowing me to post his exclusive pictures of the iStore.

Buying iPhone in Pakistan

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 7, 2008 at 7:41 AM

We know that 3G iPhone (or iPhone 2) is going to hit its lovers from July 11th, 2008, along side people in Pakistan are anxiously waiting for unlocked 3G iPhone to get into their hands. But still there are countless folks around, in Pakistan, who have not met iPhone in person; however, they must be seeking their chances to get familiar with this device.

So if you are in Pakistan and looking for iPhone then you can go with original (non 3G) version of iPhone, and they are easily available in Pakistan. I will count some of the stores and online resources.
Going with original iPhone has couple of reasons

  • Original iPhone comes with 4GB or 8GB internal memory, while 3G iPhone will come with 3 GB memory limit
  • There is no good difference but the added capability of 3G support in new iPhone, which is of no use in Pakistan, even WiFi is not largely do-able practice in Pakistan.
  • Early response is that 3G iPhone will cross PKR 50,000 mark for Pakistani markets, that’s half a lakh, okay fine you can afford it, but why to spend almost PKR 10,000 extra for a similar device or in some cases low featured iPhone?
  • Unfortunately, 3G iPhone is not going to hit Pakistani stores officially, hence we can expect any hulchal only after the iPhone Gurus will come up with some unlocking techniques, which may take weeks if not months.

So why not to focus on original version of iPhone? However 3G iphone may come into consideration, once the unlocked version is there and also some 3G network in Pakistan.

iPhone Stores in Pakistan

As stated earlier, no official presence of iPhone is there in Pakistan, hence you will have to look around those shops who have managed to get unlocked iPhones from US or European countries, or in other case they have unlocked them here in their labs.

Hafeez Center, in Lahore, is a good solution to find a shop to purchase iPhone. Other than Lahore, Singapore Plaza in Saddar Rawalpindi, serves iPhone enthusiast from Pindi/Islamabad.

Couples of online recourses found are here and here where individuals claim that they offer unlocked iPhones at catchy prices (please verify them, and purchase anything at your own risk, I have not verified them at all)
iPhone Prices in Pakistan

iPhone prices vary from shop to shop and from city to city…but in general, expect unlocked original iPhone 8GB for PKR 38,000 to PKR 41,000
