3G iPhone Got Unlocked in only 5 Days

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 16, 2008 at 6:33 AM

iphonelock24 3G iPhone Got Unlocked in only 5 DaysGood News has hit for those countries where 3G iPhone was not officially launched. Original iPhone took good time to get unlocked, however, its 3G variant, 3G iPhone was unlocked in only its first week. MobileCrunch reports quoting a Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo that the DesbloqueioBR has hit won the race and became very first one to unlock 3G iPhone.

A relatively simple procedure was adopted to achieve this. They altered handset’s firmware and installed a special card add-on to the SIM chip, that’s it. With this configureation DesbloqueioBR claims that the 3G iPhone can now connect to any carrier.

In 22 countries, only one service provider has been authorized to sell 3G iPhone. All carieers are subsidizing the Apple’s newest gadget, resulting long term contracts and relatively larger monthly prices.

DesbloqueioBR says that it has plans to charge between 250 and 375 dollars to unlock an 3G iPhone. Other unlocks are sure to follow and so are the stories that cover them.

Rumor: Mobilink and Link Dot Net Being (partially) Sold?

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 12, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Don’t get shocked, this was just a rumor, and industry insiders have denied this news in any case. However, TheTechthurtle today morning claimed that UK based Vodafone and Orascom have closed a deal to sell 26% shares of Pakistan’s largest cellular company Mobilink to Vodafone. Blog, without citing any source, claims that both the companies were in talks for quite some time now, however, the deal was closed recently. No words were said regarding the value of deal; hence the total value of Mobilink is still unknown.

It was said that Vodafone had been seeking its chance to enter Pakistani cellular market to further strengthen its regional existence for last three years and at the same time Mobilink was eying any investor to share the investment injection.

TheTechthurtle writes that Vodafone has already setup their office in Islamabad since 2006 and living a life of anonymity.

Vodafone owns cellular operations in 20 countries globally. And the trend observed is that they enjoy sole ownership of companies. They have 52 percent as their least number of shares in any network in India. If the rumor is true then it can be depicted that Vodafone may have asked Mobilink for at least 50 percent shares. In another scenario, Waird has been enjoying 30 percent sleeping partner, Singtel. But Vodafone has got an attitude to rule independently, like we saw in India; they rebranded Hutch throughout India in a campagn called as World’s largest rebranding

Another rumor was spread in the same post, that Orascom’s Internet wing, Link Dot Net, was also in talks with another UK telco Orange to sell it partial shares. Blogger writes that Link Dot Net is in serious trouble due to their weak infrastructure and poor planning.

iPhone Lands Globally

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 12, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Enriched with enhanced data capabilities, Apple’s new iPhone 3G has hit the stores in more than 22 countries world wide, sales started with Japan/New Zealand and ending the drama in west shores of US in Seattle and California. Technology and Gadgets blogs remained engaged with iPhone discussions whole day long, but what these discussions mean to a Pakistani cellular user? I am afraid nothing much.

Never mind, dealers and buyers in Pakistan are anticipating the 3G iPhone thriving in local markets in as little as a few days. Though they were not big in numbers, but the roar and thirst of iPhone enthusiasts could be easily sensed in local markets in Pakistan.

Along with Pakistan, In the many other Asian countries, ads and banners were seen in markets for unlocked iPhones and services to unlock them. Phone sellers (retailers and distributors alike) are already seen taking orders for the new iPhone, who estimated its arrival on the gray market in about a week.

On other side, world wide launch saw a drew thousands in North America, Asia and Europe, with customers creating a half-mile line in Tokyo, braving summer heat in Madrid and scouring Toronto for the shortest queues. Lines stretched kilometers with thousands of buyers in queue to get their iPhone.

Through the process stock cleared, however, many faced activation problems that marred the launch of the new 3G iPhone - alongwith, Apple admitted that its new data-synchronisation service, MobileMe, also suffered from some technical difficulties.

Bangladesh to Offer WiMAX Licenses

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on July 7, 2008 at 4:14 AM

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has announced that they have reached at point where they are ready to issue Broadband Wireless Access licenses in the country. Initial draft that has guidelines for the upcoming bidding and for WiMAX license details says that two nation wide licenses will be given away in 2.3Ghz band and one in the 2.5Ghz band.

Operators already operating in the country are banned from bidding - and the bidders are limited to having 60% foreign shareholding. Furthermore, the draft says that licensees will be allowed to rollout and operate network to provide nationwide Broadband Wiress services based on IEEE 802.16e (WiMAX) standards. The system can be point-to-multipoint or mesh radio systems consisting of BWA distribution hub stations and their associated subscriber stations (or BWA access devices). The last mile solution may be done in conjunction with WiFi, but that wholly depend on operators.

The good thing, which may be reconsidered after input from operators, is that it is said mandatory for all operators to share the same tower and existing infrastructure if available.

Dhabi Group and Orascom may seek its opportunities in Bangladesh’s emerging broadband market. Along with, we may see rise in equipment orders for Motorola and Huawei.

Telenor and TeliaSonera Likely to Merge

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on June 16, 2008 at 7:57 AM

Norwegian Telenor and Swedish-Finnish TeliaSonera are likely to merge in coming months, after TeliaSoera rejected Franc-Telecom’s $42 billion deal, this was revealed in Norwegian Parliament last week.

Via [Guardian]

Chairman of TeliaSonera, Ola Borten Moe also told Reuters that it was up to Telenor to evaluate the possibilities and initiate any talks. His comments sent Telenor shares plummeting just before market close on Monday, with analysts sceptical of the financial logic behind any such tie-up. The stock closed down 4.2 percent at 103 crowns, valuing the group at nearly $36 billion.

France Telecom unveiled a bid worth about $41 billion on June 5 for TeliaSonera and said it aimed to reach a “friendly” deal, but the Nordic group’s board rejected the cash-and-stock offer as too low.
The move by France Telecom has also sparked speculation that state-controlled Telenor could launch a counterbid that would keep TeliaSonera in Nordic hands.

“It could be a good industrial solution for Telenor to buy TeliaSonera,” Moe told Reuters in an interview.
“They were close to being merged several years ago, and there clearly remain interesting synergies between the two companies,” said Moe of the Centre Party, a junior partner in the government.
The Norwegian government owns 54 percent of Telenor. The Swedish government holds 37.3 percent of TeliaSonera but has said it is eager to sell as part of a privatisation push, and Finland owns 13.7 percent of the group created by the 2002 merger of Sweden’s Telia and Finland’s Sonera.

So far the Norwegian government has declined to say what it would think of a Telenor bid for TeliaSonera. Telenor has also declined to tip its hand.
Moe said he was “fundamentally positive” towards a link-up between the groups after efforts to merge them failed in 1999. “There would have to be an initiative from Telenor,” Moe said. “They will not get an instruction from us to buy.”

“They must themselves consider if it is interesting and at what price. And then it could become necessary for them to turn to us to hear what we think, and the need for capital,” Moe said. “I do not see that we would reduce our stake.”

Analysts were cool towards the idea, which could require a hefty capital increase, saying that the two already overlapped on many markets in the Nordics. Also, the Swedish-Finnish group has weaker growth prospects because of its lower exposure to emerging markets, they said.
