Google Chrome is Going to be my Next Web Browser

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on September 3, 2008 at 8:51 AM

Its matter of just two or three days, when i read about this Google Chrome ( a web browser like firefox or internet explorer) at TechCrunch. Being a windows user, earlier on i didn’t gave this idea any thought, actually there were few reports that Google Chrome is going to be for Linux only at first.

chorome_1-300x208 Google Chrome is Going to be my Next Web Browser

But today, when Google actually announced their this new Web Browser, i was redirected to the download page where it said to download Chrome for Windows.

Believe me i am having fun with this light weight but too efficent browser. I am a power user, and tend to open dozens of websites at a time, which is very managfully supported by this Google Chrome.

At this point of stage, after using tens of Google Products, let me say… Google Is Master!

There are plenty of new features packed in this browser, which i suspect will never “Stop responding”. Another thing you will feel like is that Google has combined the attributes of Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera, and added their own secruity and value into one browser and named it as Chrome.

Peer Online

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on September 3, 2008 at 6:31 AM

Geo TV has been airing a famous Islamic TV Show named as “Aalim Online”, which in fact inspired me to name this post as “Peer Online”. (I just took the name, other wise there resembles nothing between this particular show and my this post)

Businesses in Pakistan are in state of transformation, which are turning their concentration towards the internet now, where they obviously get more target audience, hence more leads converting into sales. Though we lack extensive e-commerce infrastructure in our country, but even though medium and large sized businesses are demonstrating their existence on web.

Similarly, our Peers have started adopting internet too, and now they are broadcasting their publicity messages on internet; mainly through BULK emailing; but soon we may expect plenty of websites dedicated to these Peers and their quick solutions to every problems.

Apparently, these Peers spend handsome amount of money for broadcasting their email messages (let me mention here that many email broadcasters charge Rs. 5000 for 10000 emails). These heavy advertisement budgets actually leave a question mark on their legitimacy and the claims they make in emails such as

  • Solution to Every Problem
  • Meet your love in only 7 days
  • Make your husband obey you for rest of life and so on…

These emails normally leave a Mobile Number at the end as a point of contact…! While one must provide a physical address while doing a remote business. So things are quite confusing here…!

This is a very sensitive issue, so I don’t want to discuss it more, but I advice my readers to act sensibly when you get such an email with high claims and low rates.

PTCL’s Smart IPTV - Service Review

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on September 2, 2008 at 6:39 AM

Thanks to Mr. Mudassar Jehangir, Editor-in-Chief, More Magazine, who did this service Review of PTCL’s Smart IPTV” and allowed me to post it here.

I received two calls in the third week of August from the sales staff of PTCL confirming from me the order of “Smart IPTV connection”. Before the installation, my telephone line was checked by the staff to confirm the signal strength.

IPTV won’t run properly if data downstream and upstream value is lower than 10 in your phone line. In case it is less than 10, the transmission will be jerky.

2 PTCLs Smart IPTV - Service ReviewThe installation was just a process of 1 hour. My old broadband modem was replaced by the new modem of Huawei. From the modem you can get two CAT 5 (network) cables for the out put. One goes to the computer for the internet connection and other goes to the set-top box, a device which makes the transmission possible. Technically, set-top box (STB) is a device that connects to a television and an external source of signal, turning the signal into content which is then displayed on the television screen.

The old PTCL logo was visible on the top left corner of the box which revealed that the smart IPTV project was designed to be launched in the year 2006 and it must have been put on hold due to certain reasons.
To activate the STB, there is a content security IRDETO ZETA smart card which is inserted into the box to unlock the transmission. Basically this is the card that makes possible the desired TV contents and the revenue. For the information, IRDETO is an Amsterdam based company which is into Digital TV content business since 1969.

7 PTCLs Smart IPTV - Service ReviewOnce the card is inserted and STB turned on, same old PTCL logo appears on the welcome screen which confirms the project’s roots back in 2006.

At the start, the main menu screen provides options to choose either live transmission or Video on Demand (VOD).  The pause and rewind option is available for few of the live channels. Currently PTCL provides a reverse transmission for 2 and half hours which it plans to extend for more hours in the future.
Overall the quality of live transmission is impressive and unlike conventional TV cable the result is High Definition from 1st to over 100th channel. Initially PTCL had announced a free service of IPTV for 15 days which it has extended for one more month just like it did with the broadband services.

The Video on Demand (VOD) section requires more attention as the already saved movies (both Hollywood and Bollywood) on the server are obsolete, it is bearable for a temporary period but very soon PTCL will need to update its database and include new collection because it is a paid section and subscriber is required to pay Rs. 50 every time he/she select and item.

The service also allows parents to lock and unlock any channel, and allows users to search for their movies and TV shows by title and cast listing and then watch them on-demand.

Smart IPTV service is only possible on places where PTCL broadband is already running. Homes or offices where broadband connection is a requirement, Smart IPTV will be a point of attraction. On a 1 MB connection the total monthly fee becomes Rs. 2300 provided you have purchased the Set Top Box for Rs. 9995.

9 PTCLs Smart IPTV - Service Review

PTCL was smart enough to start selling the broadband connection well before the IPTV launch. According to company’s statistics it has sold more than 50,000 broadband connections so far. The prospects of selling IPTV connections are therefore higher on already installed broadband connections.

Only time will tell how quickly it can become a replacement to the conventional cable which still cost Rs. 100 to 200 and has huge acceptability among masses. The availability of service largely depends on the condition of copper wire that goes to the customer’s premises.

IPs Carrying Illegal Voice Traffic will be Blocked Automatically: PTA

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on August 27, 2008 at 6:31 PM

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is now capable of automated blocking of Internet Protocol Addresses (IPs), that carry illegal voice traffic that is termination and/or origination of voice packets in a bid to check grey traffic flowing into the country, as reported in ‘The News’ PTA says that the facility will be operational within the next few days.

Paper says that PTA Chairman Dr Muhammad Yaseen announced this during a meeting with the CEOs of major Internet Service Providers (ISPs) of the country.

Chairman requested all the Internet Service Providers to declare their IP addresses along-with the antecedents of their customers so that illegal telecom traffic could be monitored. It was emphasized that the operators should oversee their customers to make sure they are not involved in grey traffic termination. He sought the operators’ cooperation to stem the menace of grey telephony.

It merits mentioning here that PTA announced publicly that all (registered) call centers should provide their IP addresses to PSEB to make sure that their voice traffic is not blocked.

I am not sure if this system is capable of detecting voice packets sent by Yahoo, Skype, netmeeting etc… Hope these programmes would be allowed for home users.

Since the inception of technical facility in May 2008 at the PTA, the IP addresses found to be involved in illegal activities were being blocked manually and in the process, over 14 million minutes (worth around Rs100 million) have been saved on monthly basis. Now these would be automatically blocked if any IP, not authorized to carry voice, is found doing so. Under the current policy, only LDIs and international call centers are authorized to carry voice across national boundaries.
