Google Doodle for Eid-ul-Adha

Posted by: Bites85 on December 8, 2008 at 12:10 AM

We achieved a lot when we started the Google is Biased issue, couple of months ago. We had a simple proposal to Google to start making Doodle’s for Islamic Festivals, like it do for other days. It was widely discussed on many high profile blogs and even on Global Voices Online. Majority of people and even Non-Muslims liked the idea that there should be Doodle for Muslim Festivals as well. Specifically for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, the two major Muslim Festivals of the world.

It’s just a celebration like Christmas; the message is simple “peace and harmony for all”. Like we see beautiful doodles for Christmas, we just deserve to see Doodles for Muslim Festivals also. It is matter of fact that with huge demographic representation and a significant part of Google revenues are generated by Muslims with services like Gmail, Earth, Adsense, Ad words etc.

The issue reached to the top management of Google and we also got reply from them. The news is that Google has unofficially confirmed for Eid Doodles from next Eid-Ul-Fitr.

Following is the message to Google from Muslims around the world:

“Kindly make Google Doodles for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha from year 2009 and onwards. And show it on main domain Google.com and on all of its sub domains around the web.”

This will really help to bond Muslims with other religions and will flourish relations between all the countries.

Eid-ul-Adha is just a few days ahead, and my friend Altaf Sayani was kind enough to make a Doodle on such a short notice. So all my Muslim Brothers and Sisters I present to you the Google Doodle for Eid-ul-Adha:

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on December 5, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Undoubtedly, the largest job portal of Pakistan, Rozee.pk has stopped offering free job postings for employers. Now, employers need to pay Rs. 850 per job to view all CVs that they receive for a specific job, or otherwise they will be allowed to view maximum of 5 CVs per job post.

It must be noted that applying for job is free like it was before.

At this point of time, an important note for those who are applying for jobs on Rozee.pk is that you may see a significant decline in response from employers. At the same time, employers may start hunting for other freely available job portals, such as mustaqbil.com, apnijobs.com and others.

If you want to apply for a featured job, you will have to pay Rs. 850 via cheque/draft or credit card.

What and Why to Secure a Web Server

Posted by: Muhammad Ali Raza on December 5, 2008 at 7:29 AM

“What we loose with a less secure website?” I am asked this question by many people, today, in this article I will try to cover those core reasons, which make it essential for everyone to secure his/her web server. We will try to measure necessary security threats for all scale of websites, ranging from personal blogs to community websites, small sized company website to corporations’ websites.

Blog Sites

Let’s start with bloggers, and why securing web server is important to them. Normally blogger are of the view that why the hell should I spend money or energy to this so-called security; while I have no sensitive data on my blog, neither I am in serious conflict with anyone? And even if some looser gets into my blog, I will simply change my server and will restore with the backup that I take on daily basis. So not a bid deal at all.

Well, I am afraid, but it is not exactly the same! Let’s peek into those incentives that a blogger offers to a website hacker. First thing that comes in is the show off, and probably it is the most enjoyable target for hackers. Normally, it is observed that blogs are not that secure when compared to corporate websites, hence they are easy to get in.

So hackers, especially the beginners start their careers with hacking blog sites.

It is matter of fact that hackers don’t attack blogs for fun only, there can be financial aspect with hacking a blog as well, such as many hackers attack blogs to gain its data for instance, names, emails, IPs and latter on they re-sell it (for hefty value).

Another very dangerous thing can be, what if a hacker comes in and change your google ad sense code and changes it to his/her code, even in that case, a blogger can be in deep trouble. Continue Reading This Story

Computers and its Usage in Pakistan

Posted by: Reality Bites on December 1, 2008 at 6:07 AM

pakistan_computer_usage Computers and its Usage in PakistanI cannot forget that day in my life, when my brother bought me 486 computer for Rs. 45,000/- and soon I started to explore windows 3.1 & Windows 95 on this expensive machine. Today after almost 10 years, things have changed a lot, and so are the prices for computers. But unfortunately, we, as a nation are still immature in terms of using computers and in terms of getting benefited of its advantages.

Today, despite 15 percent general sales tax on computers, one can buy a reasonable computer for just 5 to 7 thousand Rupees. Pakistan observed highest growth rate, globally, for computer usage and penetration in recent years, but unfortunately, today in our society masses don’t use computer technology as they should have used it. Like most of the computers bought in rural or in urban areas to some extent are mainly used for playing Movie and games, to chat or to surf Porn websites.

We must understand this that computers can be used very effectively, which can earn lots of money for students and old alike. What we need to do is to explore new tools and techniques to help ourselves and to bring forward productive products in market. Like I know most of the developers are “Own Feed Developers” They learnt majority of their development techniques through online tutorials, How to Do’s and CBT’s available on the internet. I myself studied most of the languages and tools from tutorials/ CBT’s available on the web. Continue Reading This Story

Cyber War Between India Pakistan Ends!

Posted by: Muhammad Ali Raza on November 30, 2008 at 5:31 PM

hacking_agreement Cyber War Between India Pakistan Ends!I am glad that my previous post about Cyber War between India and Pakistan got tremendous response, not only through fellow commenter’s, but it was escalated in main stream media, and was carried by Geo TV, Dawn TV, Express TV, Daily Jang, The News and others, but at the same time, some people took the whole story in wrong sense. I was just reporting on inside activities, however, few fellows thought that I was promoting the negative stories by publicizing them.

While I was aware of the impact that my story could make, at the same time, being a part of ProPakistani.com it was my core duty to update my readers regarding happenings in web security domain of Pakistan.

Since my previous, I had been researching on the hacking activities going on between Pakistan and India. Meanwhile, the occurrence of Mumbai incident further increased the chances of massive defacement from both sides; which could cost heavy losses to both the countries.

During all this disappointment, I got this invitation from PCA group for a group chat where all other top groups including Pakbugs Z-company, PCA and some other old school hackers were participating.
These Pakistani groups chatted for 2 hours before they allowed me to step in. As soon as I joined, ICW2 and HMG also joined this group chat, which meant that these groups are now negotiating and want to quit Cyber War. Continue Reading This Story

State of Broadband Internet in Pakistan : Overview

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 28, 2008 at 8:34 AM

broadband_internet_pakistan1 State of Broadband Internet in Pakistan : OverviewInternet Service Providers in Pakistan are offering wide range of Broadband technologies, such as DSL, Cable, FTTH and WiMAX. Currently, DSL is the leading broadband technology in Pakistan with approx 65 percent market share, while major DSL providers in Pakistan are Micronet, LinkdotNet, Cybernet, Multinet and PTCL.

HFC (Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial) is the second largest broadband technology in terms of market share. Approximately, 25 percent of total broadband subscribers in Pakistan use FHC technology. Worldcall happens to be the largest cable modem broadband provider in Pakistan through the use of FHC network in Karachi and Lahore; along with comes Wateen Telecom which is also providing broadband using FHC. Competition in DSL market is easily seen, while the core retention element is the service and support.

Use of FTTH and WiMAX has increased, though not with the same ratio as in developed countries, but emergence and benefits of services such as IPTV is pulling customers towards FTTH. There are around 2800 FTTH and 20,000 WiMAX subscribers in Pakistan. Wateen Telecom and recently launched Mobilink Infinity are two WiMAX providers in the country. However, due to first of its kind experience of WiMAX technology, service issues are being reported. Continue Reading This Story
