Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 7, 2008 at 9:12 PM

We are told by very reliable sources that Orascom has assigned Mr. Rashid Khan, the new CEO of Mobilink – While Mr. Zouhair Khalid was asked to report Cairo based Orascom Headquarter.

Our Orascom sources have confirmed this news however, Mobilink spokesman preferred not to comment anything over the issue.

Pakistani National, Mr. Rashid Khan was serving Banglalink as CEO, Orascom’s arm in Bangladesh. He has been part of Mobilink as well and has served Mobilink from 2004 to 2006 as Chief Commercial Officer. That was the time when Mobilink Reached from 5 million customers to 20 million.

Analysts term this change due to dropping position of Mobilink, in terms of revenues and customers as well. It may be recalled that Mobilink has been consistently loosing customers lately. While on the other hand as Mobilink’s head, Mr. Khaliq was unable to control the operating expenses, which significantly went up due to liverish style that is now identity of Mobilink.

Death Penalties for Cyber-Terrorism - Part of Law Now

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 7, 2008 at 5:16 AM

This news report that appeared in “Daily Times” today (November 7th, 2008) - appears to be another interesting outcome of Government; as this “Prevention of Electronic Crimes Ordinance” is effective from September 29, however, the government just got late in announcing it.

Don’t get worried, my readers, In fact this story is not for everyone, because it says death penalties to those only, who are involved in Terrorism act, being carried away through computers and internet. Furthermore, death penalty is limited to an offense that ‘Causes death of any person’. Continue Reading This Story

A Post Dedicated to Mr. Duffer

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 4, 2008 at 11:04 AM

I have been reporting about technical and very formal stuff since I started this blog, but this particular post is very informal, and dedicated to my readers who are my friends as well. I don’t know if I afford such an off topic post or not, but I can compromise on this over my friends.

I started blogging few months ago, it was May 2008 to be exact - and at that time, I didn’t know that I will become a full time blogger. In fact it was early response that I got from senior bloggers, let me name them, Junaid Khan of Pro-Pakistan, was first one to interact, then Babar Bhatti of Telecompk.net, then Osama Hashmi of GreenWhite.org.

Suddenly, I did a post that got me 27,000 visits in a single day, (yea it just happened, it was not planned, neither imagined – but it just happened), when I actually started thinking of running this blog in more dedicated manner.

During the while, I found very nice people around, who encouraged me, helped me, and told me things which I never knew. Let me thank you all for the help you did and wisdom you gave me.

Duffer – I love this person for two reasons, 1 – coz I don’t know him, 2 – he is a khara banda
Nayni – A very talented and nice lady, who encouraged me for blogging in my early days
Nudrat - A friend in deed… She had given me her credit card to buy hosting for ProPakistani, as i never had any credit card until then. May Allah bless you!
Sohail Abid – Again a very decent person and a proficient programmer. He helped in getting new design of this blog - along with i keep on consulting him on various issues and bugs.
Saad Hamid – Told me very precious tips for SEO, he also helped me setting up my new server (which is on Linux Ubuntu) from scratch - many other tricks that he keeps on telling me.
Zeeshan Shafquat: He is my little bro, he writes for ProPakistani too, Google’s Doodles post by him was one of most discussed posts on ProPakistani.
Asad – He is my competitor by the way, he runs a similar blog too, PakSpider.com and let me add… he is a good competitor, nice friend he is. Asad also helped me for SEO in various phases.
Saad Ibrahim – Never spoke with him directly, but I followed his tutorial for integrating Google Search Engine with Wordpress… Thanks Man! I am looking forward to more such tutorials on your blog
Hanif Paras – He remained quite consistent commenter on ProPakistani, I am missing him for few weeks now, hope everything is fine with him
Muhammad Ali Raza – Also writes for ProPakistani, and a very good friend.

There are many others, who would like anonymity. Such as journalists from press; they helped me a lot in preparing several stories. Spokesmen from cellular companies were always kind enough in responding my queries… and this list goes on.

I am not adding Reality Bites’ name, and he knows why I did so. Also the valued readers and commenters… they mean a lot to me.

crux: I am nothing without you guys! Thanks once Again - I am sorry if i missed any name in the list.

Few Proposals for Cellular Promotions

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 4, 2008 at 7:37 AM

Five Minutes Pulse Calls

Many of us miss those golden days when PTCL used to allow 5 minutes’ long calls. How about implementing this idea in cellular calls too? - makes sense? Okay price of this five minute call should be lesser than 5 multiples of one minute call; for instance, if one minute call is charged Rs. 2 per minute, than 5 minute call could be offered at Rs. 8 per minute or even Rs. 7.

Such a package will be picked a lot by ladies, who take couple of minutes before gearing the actual conversation. Same can be the case with few of gentlemen as well.

“Your Mobile is Switched Off” Caller Tune

This gonna be an interesting caller tune. Everyone gonna love it – but not the cellular companies. Reason is simple, who is going to pick the phone then? No One! Hence less revenues… but what if a tune is composed with such a message “App ka Matlooba number iss waqt band hay… hahaha ban giya na mamu, hold kar bulata hon” Continue Reading This Story

Mobile Network Coverage & Quality in Pakistan

Posted by: Reality Bites on November 3, 2008 at 4:17 AM

mobile-tower-223x300 Mobile Network Coverage & Quality in PakistanIt is estimated that almost 19000 cell sites have been installed by five mobile operators in different urban and rural areas of the Pakistan, in which Mobilink is on the top and Ufone fallowing on the same track with almost more than 4536 cell sites and others seems to be growing.

It is always observed that network coverage played important role for cellular operators to be a market leader with the help of value added services, as the network coverage remains the key element for increments in subscribers within months.

In this customer acquisition formula 1 race, where everyone is trying to compete each other with all tweaks and tricks they can play in grabbing customers from other operators and even attract new acquisitions to increase more revenues.

According to Ministry of Information Technology Mobile cellular policy, Telco operators are bound to roll out at least 70% network coverage of tehsil headquarters in four years with minimum 10% tehsils in all provinces. Most probably all cellular companies have attained this level in coverage roll out plan, but question is still remained unanswered, how quality of the network has been maintained so far?

Because voice distortion, call hangings, anonymous connectivity, call connection time, air interface blocking, call completion rate, call quality etc are still the same issues for customers faced in rural and urban areas. Continue Reading This Story

This Website Has Thousands of Pakistani Girls’ Mobile Numbers - damn!

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on November 3, 2008 at 3:51 AM

Before I start, let me say sorry to those who will get hurt by this post!

Earning Money through websites is a hot topic these days. And it is so good that people in Pakistan are realizing the power of Internet. There are very many successful examples around us, very young guys like Saad Hamid and Haris Nadeem, who are earning thousands of dollars a month from their websites. And I am sure there would be many others too; but i know only two of them. These teens actually get revenues from ads they publish on their websites, which contain rich and useful content.

But unfortunately, there is a pool of people who are using this power for internet for bad means. Yea, porn websites owners come in this category too but they are not going to harm you unless you don’t visit their websites.

This website, called PkMobileNumber.com is even worst – I was shocked to see how they are spreading mobile number of girls. There is a simple submission form on this website… you can enter name and phone number and press submit and this number will get published. I believe this 4 months old website has thousands of such mobile numbers of girls.

I believe (I can be wrong here as well, but) there won’t be more than 1 percent girls in our society who would voluntarily want their numbers to be displayed on such a website. The question is then how come there are thousands of numbers available on this website? Continue Reading This Story

Mobile Commerce & Pakistani Telco Industry

Posted by: Reality Bites on November 1, 2008 at 12:14 AM

M-Commerce is exchange of products & services and to make e-transaction with the help of mobile phones. It came in to existence, especially after 2000 and when CMTO’s applied for licenses to give customer handy services at instant.

In Pakistan, mobile phones are mostly used for voice calling and data services like SMS  but in recent years the value added services have become integral part of Telco’s revenues like CRBT (color ring back tone) and others. Most of CMTO’s are earning sky-scraping ARPU (Average Revenue per User) because of these value added service. But we cannot deny the fact that ARPU based services are the major challenge for Telco’s to maintain brand equity and ARPU’s on the consistent pace.

Common M-Commerce services are:

  • Mobile Ticketing
  • Mobile Vouchers
  • Coupons
  • Balance Sharing
  • Loyalty SMS Cards
  • Content Service Purchasing
  • Location Based Services (LBS)
  • Information Services Continue Reading This Story

U-Campaigns Need U-Turn

Posted by: Abu Asma on October 31, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Let me introduce Islamabad based Abu Asma, who is associated with advertising for 12 years now and is currently a Creative Director in a leading advertising Agency. Let’s welcome Abu Asma as latest addition in ProPakistani’s Team.

It is a general view point that money making in Telecom Sector is very simple – they lay down their infrastructure once, and then they can reap money for ever. Indeed this phenomenon is logical, but in real this might not be the case with every venture as some towering expectations might get crashed in days.

With multiple telecom players available in Pakistan, all the telecom companies are fighting hard to increase their share in market. It is very interesting to see that now mobile companies are offering call prices in Paisas to attract more customers and their strength to sell their products by advertising.

As a creative professional most of the time I wonder that big companies just believe on ambush marketing with out localizing the content of their adverts – also, without keeping their customers in mind. Today we have selected Ufone to discuss its advertising campaigns and their approach towards TVCs. Continue Reading This Story
