PTA has quoted 4,416,417 fixed line subscribers in 2007-2008 annual report, which were 4,806,206 just a year ago.
The major challenge for fixed line segment of Telco industry is customer churn on continuous basis, where churn is only occurring in case of voluntary basis, which is massive.
In 2000, when de-regulation in Telco industry was hot topic to relevant personalities , but unfortunately important prospects missed or ignored by experts about it’s long term effects on fixed segment of telco industry. As we have not seen since 2007 end any parallel strategies to manage market equilibrium. No doubt, everyone gives lame excuses that this fixed line churn is being experienced everywhere in the world, but this cannot fulfill the gap between both segments.
Better late than never, as PTCL came back with good customer services they need good Customer Retention & Loyalty Programmes and solutions:
- Churn Management
- Customer Behavior Monitoring
- Loyalty Offerings (Give-Aways)

In my previous columns, I discussed the advertising industry and its relation with Telecom sector in detail. In this article my focal point will remain the banking sector and few of its ads. But before discussing the current banking situation, I want to overview previous few years regarding finances of Pakistan.
In previous regime, I mean Musharraf’s era, lots of new products evolved; like credit cards, ATMs, E- banking, small loans for common people and what not. We used to receive multiple calls a day from banks offering one or the other product. Tele sale representatives used make hundreds of calls daily to meet their targets. In short we had eight years of boom in banking sector with higher foreign reserves and stronger economy every month.
Instead of discussing rights and wrongs of that time, we need to focus on results.
Interest rates were as low as 9 or 10 % during that time. Even the Central Directorate of National Savings (CDNS) had come down to its lowest mark up of 11%; earlier on which was 18%. People withdrew their heavy amounts from banks and CDNS and invested millions in the property sectors; resultantly real estate industry touched new height of success, created plenty of jobs. We know that real estate industry boosts at least 10 other allied sectors. So during that era Bahria Town, Giga Mall, Emaar Pakistan and many other builders and developers were on the rise.
Apparently, from a layman’s viewpoint, policies then were business friendly, stability in the government and investors had the confidence to risk huge investment.
However, the situation has dramatically changed, as now banks are again hungry for funds. In the last few months or so, we have seen a new trend of advance profit in the banking sector. ABL, The Bank of Punjab, Atlas Bank have already announced the best possible advance profit for the customers who have money more than Rs. 50,000/- and want handsome profit immediately. ABL has offered Rs. 13,500, while Atlas Bank has offered 16,000 and last but not the least, The Bank of Punjab has offers Rs.19,900-advance profit for deposit of Rs. 100,000/- for a period of 18 months.

After recent reshuffle in Orascom’s top level management, there is a strong rumor out there that Mobilink may undergo some changes in its higher management as well. These changes may surround couple of Vice Presidents and some middle level management.
A high level source has communicated us that Mr. Irfan Akram, who is currently the Vice President Sales may head Administration department very soon. The primary reason for this Change in portfolio is to ease Mr. Irfan Akram from tough sales’ situation in recent months. The decision of course came with the consent of Mr. Rashid Khan, CEO, Mobilink.
Currently Administration and HR department is being headed by Mr. Ali Raza Mehdi; meaning that he will keep on heading HR while administration will go to Mr. Akram.
Mr. Aamir Ibrahim is most likely to head Sales, who is currently Chief Strategy Officer, Mobilink. It is very much obvious that Sale’s is going to be the toughest and most reasult demanding department for Mobilink in coming months.
It merits mentioning here that both Mr. Rashid Khan and Irfan Akram come from ex-Paktel team and bear good acquaintance. Mr. Bilal Munir Sheikh, Vice President, Marketing was part of that Paktel team as well.
Mobilink’s spokesman denied any such organizational reshuffle in near future.

So this was about India; now let’s get back to Pakistan, and discuss what prospects and challenges we have got when it comes to 3G network and its implementation in our country.
3G Network Prospects For Pakistan’s Market
Service with better value is always welcomed by the masses. In 3G services, customers can get data speed of up to 2Mbps, while the highest possible speed in GSM is only 50Kpbs and EDGE is 387Kbps (this max speed on GSM and EDGE can vary depending on network).
With emergence of 3G it will be something like transiting from Dial-up to Broadband; means no question, what’s so ever, for comparison, but the answer that “3G will rock”. Continue Reading This Story

Year 2008 is offering its last days to color it either with sorrow or joy. Everyone has a lot to talk about his experiences of this very year at all social, political and personal level. Like all other sectors, telecom sector is being viewed from different angles. I humbly accept that I know least about this sector. I am just a ‘user’, a person who is only interested to know about which company is the best service provider, which offers inexpensive calling rates and attractive packages.
I am sure that much professional analysis about the progress of Telecom Industry must be in queue. I, here, want to record my analysis, observation and concerns as a user.
In 2008 I never showed any regret about having a mobile phone. With each passing day I kept on hearing ‘great’ news about more and more reduction in calling rates. My bill cut to half as the result of growing competition in different companies. Inbox of my mobile always kept me smiling - of course my family and friends were also enjoying the ‘generosity’ of Ufone, Warid , Mobilink, Telenor and Zong. Second half of this year amazingly showed a considerable decrease in ‘wrong’ calls – Thanks to PTA that managed to have a check on SIMS with no ‘guardians’. I also observed better customer service, though I still hate to hear the ‘promotion packages’. Last but not least, who can forget the ‘sophisticated’ and ‘colorful’ war of these companies through advertisements on TV? Continue Reading This Story

For last few years Pakistan has rapidly shown a growth in IT sector. Many new IT domains and startups have evolved and are providing the best services possible. Many technological trends are being adopted by the youth like freelance web development, designing, blogging and so on; but the activity that is most loved by teenagers is gaming.
These days guys and girls both love to play games especially online multiplayer games. Gone are the days of playing arcade games on computer - now it’s the online networking games’ culture. Groups of friends buckshot each other on MOHAA (Medal of Honor Allied Assault) or dominate each other on WOW (World of Warcraft). But to enjoy all these games not everyone has broadband connection at home. So, teens turn to gaming zones, the breeding place of future pro-gamers.
Daily thousands of teens go to gaming zones around the country, which is becoming an addiction now.
Going to gaming zones is not bad. Many kids go to become more efficient in their specific game or other just go occasionally to keep their gaming skills alive. But there are even boys who go twice a day and seven days a week to gaming zones. Continue Reading This Story

We achieved a lot when we started the Google is Biased issue, couple of months ago. We had a simple proposal to Google to start making Doodle’s for Islamic Festivals, like it do for other days. It was widely discussed on many high profile blogs and even on Global Voices Online. Majority of people and even Non-Muslims liked the idea that there should be Doodle for Muslim Festivals as well. Specifically for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, the two major Muslim Festivals of the world.
It’s just a celebration like Christmas; the message is simple “peace and harmony for all”. Like we see beautiful doodles for Christmas, we just deserve to see Doodles for Muslim Festivals also. It is matter of fact that with huge demographic representation and a significant part of Google revenues are generated by Muslims with services like Gmail, Earth, Adsense, Ad words etc.
The issue reached to the top management of Google and we also got reply from them. The news is that Google has unofficially confirmed for Eid Doodles from next Eid-Ul-Fitr.
Following is the message to Google from Muslims around the world:
“Kindly make Google Doodles for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha from year 2009 and onwards. And show it on main domain Google.com and on all of its sub domains around the web.”
This will really help to bond Muslims with other religions and will flourish relations between all the countries.
Eid-ul-Adha is just a few days ahead, and my friend Altaf Sayani was kind enough to make a Doodle on such a short notice. So all my Muslim Brothers and Sisters I present to you the Google Doodle for Eid-ul-Adha:

More proposals for Eid Doodle

PTCL has announced Year 2008- 2009 as a year of Customer care. Yes! That’s true, and they are working to enhance customers’ experience and support facilities. How about giving a try to call 1217 (former 17), you are likely to get someone greeting you even before the bell rings. He/ she will be ready to deliver you services related to directory services. Directory services are known as services related to number inquiries, but if you will ask any other information from the same helpline, they will give you respective number for further help on a specific issue.
As customer help line mechanism is segmented on the basis of services, for instance for VAS you will have to dial “6” (to get connected with customer service representative for VAS information only). The important point to note is that “only for Value Added Services information” - meaning that for the rest of services, you might have to dial other digits to get connected with the other services information.
Customer services segmented channels strategy and customer queries diversification on the basis of nature of complaints is pretty good, but PTCL must communicate with massive advertisements (print , tvc’s etc) to their customers that for their help-line, their customers should dial respective helpline to get desired information, otherwise customer complaint will not be entertained efficently. PTCL bill can also be utilized for advertisement for the same purpose. Continue Reading This Story
