Home Ministry Can Tape your Mobile/PTCL Calls

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 26, 2008 at 7:13 PM

Home Ministry of Pakistan is allowed to intercept and tape cellular, PTCL and satellite calls of any customer, reported Daily Jang Today, quoting a news item circulated by NNI.

All cellular, satellite, land line and Wireless Local Loop (such as World Call) have granted Home Ministry the direct access to all system through which the ministry can intercept, tape and retrieve any call they want.

Paper says that Home Ministry has also demanded whole record of cellular companies from their CEOs of companies operating in Pakistan.

It merits mentioning that prior this Home Ministry, only the inelegance agencies had the access to voice communication means of Pakistan and Home Ministry had to request intelligence agencies in order to tape any call.

We saw today Mr. Ehsan Iqbal of Pakistan Muslim League (N) in a press conference airing the telephonic recording of Ch. Pervaiz Elahi, former Chief Minister Punjab, and senior member of PML (Q)…Mr. Ahsen alleged Ch. Pervaiz Elahi of preparing a track against PML (N) Leader Mian Nawaz Shareef. Whole Pakistan heard that particular telephonic conversation. I personally don’t know, from where and how Ehsan Iqbal got this telephonic tape…However, this is a point where we should not keep quite, specifically the NGOs and institutes who are working for consumer rights…

I will not bear anyone intercepting into my personal conversation…Privacy abuse is a global concern now, we have seen instances of such abuse even in United States. There is a dire need now, that these governments should stop peeking into personal lives in the names of security and national interests.

Waird’s Glowing New Website

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 25, 2008 at 10:11 AM

My last two posts were on Warid’s 3rd anniversary celebrations and their upcoming investment plans, and this post is too related to Warid Telecom. I didn’t

want to bore my readers by sticking to Warid only; however, their new website compelled me to write something on it.

Well, at last Warid’s session based old website has gone away, and we have their new website that looks lot better than of the previous one, maybe not the best one that Warid could come up.

Warid guys were maybe not happy with their previous shared hosting; hence their Warid\'s Host Site Got Hackednew host is connect2host.com, which has alexa ranking of 12,883,218 (maybe just a starter). And there happened a very interesting thing, tell you what, while I was writing this post connect2host’s home page got hacked lol….

Anyway, designed in PHP, website is loaded with tons of flash animation and image objects. Having a separate low-bandwidth website was a good idea; specifically when majority of Pakistani internet users are still on dial-up.

Good Points

  • Changing the website layout and platform is itself a very good step taken by Warid IT department. Previous platform had session expiration problem, that lasted throughout three years of its life
  • Designer has beautifully placed objects on home page; clearly one can access all pages from home. Divided into three segments, front page serves consumers, corporate clients and media personals alike.
  • Navigation was quite easy, and I could easily switch between pages with help of top buttons.

Bad Points

  • I Just got a feeling that website was developed and designed in quick time, that is why 1 object (interactive images) out of three on home page is jpeg, verses two flash animations.
  • Despite of already huge traffic, every website is supposed to be Search Engine Optimized, what I see with this Warid’s new website is that it is least optimized for search engines, not even a single Meta tag.
  • Website is designed in multiple color themes, which gives a feel that you are navigating away from the website. However a peep at address bar confirmed me that I was still on WairdTel.com.
  • Locating caller tones or ring tones was relatively a hard thing. I was not able to map them, until I was in the sitemap, where I figured out that tones are under a sub menu (and were no visible). Putting them on top menu could save many user’s time.
  • You may find very limited number of tones; however we can expect the growth in coming days.
  • No search bar, for easy searching

Overall a clean, a simple, user friendly and far easy to navigate website than of what we had before.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of website that claim free SMS service; through which you can send free SMS to any mobile network in Pakistan or even world over. However, when you unfold tens of webpages, you will find that these free SMS services are not really free.

Please note that you can send maximum of 3 SMS per day from one IP through this service.

These websites normally use cellular companies’ web applets embedded into their websites, from where you can send SMS messages. However, the receiver’s reply is mandatory before your message is delivered to him/her

Though we have so many bundle offers from cellular companies that offer free or almost free text messages, but still many people find it better to send SMS from web, which are free as well. I just came across this website, named as club4sms. This portal offers a free service to send or even receive SMS through web to any network in Pakistan and all over the world.

You can download free SMS messenger as well, which is integrated with Club4SMS server, hence you will be asked for username/password to send FREE SMS from SMS messenger.Screenshot of Club4SMS

Club4SMS also offers API configuration Use their SMS Services in to your own applications.

When tested, all messages that are delivered use regular cellular numbers. Apparently, SMS bundle packages are being used in an automated way.

If used positively, a very helpful website. Give it a try, and leave your comments below regarding your experience at Club4SMS

New Era Beggars

Posted by: Aamir Attaa on May 5, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Beggars, like any other form of professional, always keep looking for innovative and more effective ways of collecting money. They are often found using very interesting techniques to gather sympathies and resultantly the money.

Gadgets, such as mobiles are not left behind by beggars. They use mobile devices and services associated with them to (better) do their businesses. Mobile phones, as they have gained popularity in Pakistan and world over, now it’s not possible to remain without mobile even for a minute; which is good for fraudulent users of this technology. So let’s review one of so many in-practice methods by these money snatchers, which you may come across as well.

“If you believe in Allah and Rasool-e-Pak, please help me by sending only PKR. 15,” interesting enough na? Right…these short text messages (SMS) appeal your generosity and also test your religious beliefs and consequently make you transfer few rupees into the account of that needy.

The amount is insignificant and people may not mind in transferring this little amount, but not to compromise their religious beliefs. But hold on a second, this way you will not encourage the begging only, but your cell number will be circulated among all beggars’ colleagues (yea that’s what I call them as their business fellows) as a softhearted number or say “Top Hit List” number.

These messages are often customized, depending on the experience of the beggar, who may also ask you that I am one of your friend and in a very upsetting situation, as I can’t directly ask you for money…could you please lend me Rs. 1000….and don’t get shocked if the numbers of zeros increase…

Well, there is no doubt that this appeal can be a genuine one, but I am afraid there are very little chances of the genuineness; instead I term it an enhanced form of begging.
