Mobile Phones to Get Expensive by Rs. 1000 From June 2008
Mobile phones coming into the country may see a hike by Rs. 1000 per mobile phone, from June 2008, reported Daily Express. Paper says that Federal Board of Revenue has suggested the finance ministry to collect custom duty tax of Rs. 1000 on each one, regardless of its price. Notification is likely to be issued in budget 2008/09. Hence mobile phones coming into Pakistan after June 11, 2008 will be sold at higher prices than of current ones.
This duty is likely to badly impact the lower end phones, which are already competing hard to get below 25 dollar mark. Ministry should opt to collect custom duty on specific phones that exceed 15,000 price or so…to relieve the low end users.
We may also see increase in duty on other telecom equipments, in coming budget. Cellular companies may dislike such custom duties.
